The All Seeing Eye: Made in China

The All Seeing Eye: Made in China

At La Bouche we feel it is important to draw attention to powerful writing that draws on our zine's concerns, that is posted in other publications.  The following link is to a lengthy article by Naomi Klein.  Her concise and immaculately researched piece for Rolling Stone Magazine on China's All Seeing Eye: “With the help of U.S. defence contractors, China is building the prototype for a high-tech police state. It is ready for export.”  is just brill n scary!

Find below a brief summary but if you have time you should defos read the real deal.

The article focuses on the city of Shizan, which being situated on a port was a little fishing village thirty years ago but became selected by China's communist party as the first special economic zone.  China would remain a socialist state but enjoy profits made by private companies and industrial growth that would manifest itself in Shizan 'the crack cocaine of capitalism' says Naomi.   China then got hooked on this drug and Shizan has become a humungous city with a population of 12.4 million people, thousands of factories, shops, banks, fast food chains etc etc. Apparently American giants like MacDonalds 'look retro' in Shizan! Anyway, the next phase of this whole Capitalist 'shibang', so to speak, is to create an all seeing eye 'some, 200,000 surveillance cameras have been installed throughout the city. Many are in public spaces, disguised as lampposts. The closed-circuit TV cameras will soon be connected to a single, nationwide network, an all-seeing system that will be capable of tracking and identifying anyone who comes within its range - a project driven in part by U.S. technology and investment. security cameras are just one part of a much broader high-tech surveillance and censorship program known in China as "Golden Shield." Sophisticated Facial recognition technology, is hugely on the agenda as Klien discovers, funded by a big state budget.

Already China has seen these surveillance systems used as a weapon against protesters. During the pre-Olympic Tibetan protests, which left 19 dead, only Tibetan's were filmed and only the most vicious surveillance shots were broadcast on the giant street screens across China. Naomi poignantly suggests that if the billions who are left impoverished by China's brutal regime were to rise up against the handful of the elite who benefit from the system it could be over-thrown.  Hence, the need for uber-control and propaganda tactics such as this.

We are huge fans of Naomi Klein as her journalism always bravely points a finger at those who are really in control of our messy world and gives a hundred inarguable reasons why and for what motive. This article really brings home that government watchtowers are being constructed all over the planet, whether we care or not or whatever the agendas are that lie behind these schemes.  It is being put to test globally and yet again, private companies are getting very rich as governments put aside huge funds for these types of projects.
